About the African Legacies Institute

The African Legacies Institute is dedicated to honoring and preserving the legacies of former African Heads of State and Government – both elected and transitional – who upheld constitutional order and advanced democratic principles.

We believe leadership is an inheritance – a legacy of service and wisdom that must be safeguarded, studied, and passed on.

Our mission is to transform that legacy into a living resource. Through digital presidential libraries, curated archives, and intergenerational dialogues, we go beyond historical documentation to actively shape Africa’s future.

By connecting the wisdom of yesterday with the challenges of today, we build bridges across generations. We ensure that the hard-earned insights of leadership – across governance, nation-building, peace, and development are not lost in transition, but instead – become a foundation for stronger institutions, long-term progress, and a shared vision for the continent’s next chapter.

Our Why

The African Legacies Institute exists to honor and preserve the enduring legacies of Africa’s democratic former Heads of State and Government – both elected and transitional – who upheld constitutional order, fostered national unity, and helped lay the foundations for peace, good governance, and sustainable development across the continent.

We believe their leadership is not just part of Africa’s past – it is a compass for its future. By safeguarding their stories and sharing their wisdom, we aim to inspire a new generation to lead with purpose, integrity, and vision.

Our Mission

To serve as a trusted innovative platform for documenting and transmitting the leadership values, wisdom, and contributions of Africa’s former Heads of State and Government – ensuring their legacies inspire the next generation and inform Africa’s democratic journey.

Our Vision

A continent where the leadership values of the past serve as a guiding light for generations to come – strengthening governance, promoting peace, and inspiring inclusive progress across Africa.

Why these legacies matter

Historical preservation

Africa’s leadership stories have too often been told by outsiders and observers. The Institute ensures these stories are documented and preserved first-hand – through the voices of those who lived and led – creating authentic, enduring records for generations to come.

Governance insights

The collective wisdom of former Heads of State and Government offers unmatched insight into the realities of leadership in African contexts – from conflict resolution and constitutional reform to institution building and sustainable development.

Democratic reinforcement

By honoring and celebrating those who upheld constitutional order and embraced democratic transitions, we reinforce the values of peaceful power transfer, term limits, and accountable leadership across the continent.

Purpose

Safeguarding Africa’s Legacies

We are committed to the documentation, preservation, and celebration of the contributions of former African Heads of State and Government. Through the creation of the first-of-its-kind Virtual Digital Presidential Libraries, we harness innovative technology to honor each leader’s legacy – making their leadership journeys, values, and impact accessible to citizens, scholars, and future leaders across the world. Combined with rigorous archival research and historically grounded storytelling, we ensure these legacies are preserved and transmitted to future generations.

Bridging generations, strengthening governance

We foster dialogue by facilitating high-level platforms for exchange between former Heads of State, policymakers, scholars, and institutions. Through structured engagement and intergenerational mentorship, we promote the transmission of leadership insights and democratic values – advancing peace, effective governance, and sustainable development across the continent.

Empowering future leaders

We are dedicated to equipping the next generation of African leaders with the values and principles embodied by the continent’s democratic leadership—including transitional Heads of State who upheld constitutional order and facilitated peaceful transitions. Through strategic engagement, mentorship, and the development of immersive virtual knowledge platforms – including presidential libraries and curated digital storytelling—we ensure their wisdom continues to inform, inspire, and prepare future changemakers.

As part of this commitment, ALI is developing the ALI Fellowship Program – a values-based, intergenerational initiative designed to connect emerging leaders with the legacy, insights, and lived experiences of Africa’s former Heads of State and Government.

Approaches and methods

Legacy-centred design

We approach every initiative with deep respect for the individual legacy of each former Head of State or Government. Our work is tailored, collaborative, and anchored in the values, service, and national context of the leaders we honor.

Archival preservation, research, and documentation

We prioritize the preservation and digitization of archival materials related to former African Heads of State and Government. This includes extensive research to gather biographical information, official records, speeches, interviews, and other key documents that reflect their leadership and national impact.

Digital innovation

We leverage cutting-edge technology to develop immersive virtual platforms – including the first-of-its-kind Virtual Digital Presidential Libraries – that preserve and present legacy materials in accessible, user-friendly formats.

Pan-African collaboration, oral history, and testimonies

We conduct oral history interviews with individuals possessing first-hand knowledge of a President’s or Prime Minister’s tenure in office. By working across borders and institutions – engaging former leaders, national archives, regional organizations, scholars, and civil society – we foster a shared commitment to democratic continuity and historical preservation.

Education knowledge transfer

We organize public lectures, seminars, exhibitions, and conferences to raise awareness and promote a deeper understanding of African political history and leadership. We also facilitate structured dialogue across generations. Our platforms – including mentorship opportunities and the upcoming ALI Fellowship Program – prioritize the transmission of leadership wisdom to those shaping Africa’s future.

Contextual integrity

We honor the sovereignty, diversity, and complexity of each African nation. Our methods are rooted in listening, cultural awareness, and an appreciation for every country’s unique democratic journey.
