Our work

The African Legacies Institute honors and preserves the leadership legacies of Africa’s democratic former Heads of State and Government – both elected and transitional – who upheld constitutional order, fostered national unity, and laid the foundations for a peaceful and prosperous continent.

Our work is grounded in three core areas:

Reshaping the global narrative

Africa’s democratic journey contains powerful stories of transformation, resilience, and innovation. At the African Legacies Institute, we document and amplify these narratives to ensure they inform contemporary governance and inspire tomorrow’s leaders. Key focus areas are:

Celebrating democratic achievements

Highlighting peaceful transitions and successful governance models.

Addressing ongoing challenges

Encouraging honest, open dialogue about obstacles to democratic progress.

Sharing African solutions

Elevating indigenous leadership approaches to global challenges.

Building future leadership

Bridging the wisdom of the past with new governance innovations.

Preserving history, inspiring generations

Through digital presidential libraries, archival preservation, and historically grounded storytelling, we document the journeys, values, and impact of former leaders – ensuring their legacies are accessible and relevant to future generations.

Our Virtual Digital Presidential Libraries are dedicated to chronicling the leadership journeys of Africa’s distinguished former Heads of State and Government. These immersive platforms offer curated, interactive, and accessible experiences that preserve legacy, promote civic education, and inspire the next generation of governance leaders.

These are not static repositories—they are living, digital spaces of learning and inspiration. Key features include:

Interactive archives

Speeches, policies, photographs, and official records brought to life through immersive digital storytelling.

Research tools

An academic platform offering scholars access to rare, previously unavailable materials on African leadership and governance.

Educational resources

Curriculum-integrated content designed to teach democratic values and African leadership history in schools and universities.

Connecting legacies to leadership in action

We create platforms that bridge generations – linking legacy with lived leadership. Through mentorship, intergenerational dialogue, and the upcoming ALI Fellowship Program, we help transmit the values and wisdom that have shaped Africa’s democratic evolution.

While the libraries preserve, our strategic digital platforms engage. This pillar builds bridges between legacy and action, offering tools and spaces for dialogue, collaboration, and influence. Key components include:

Virtual Presidential Libraries

A centralized, globally accessible platform showcasing the lives, contributions, and leadership journeys of Africa’s former Heads of State and Government

Documentaries & Publications

Biographical films, academic publications, policy briefs, and multimedia storytelling that capture leadership legacies and share them with the world.

High-Level Retreats

Closed-door convenings of former leaders, policymakers, scholars, and civil society for deep dialogue, peer learning, and actionable collaboration.
